NEW DELHI, MARCH. 28. In yet another step indicating the growing closeness of the Congress to the Sikh community, the National Akali Dal president, Paramjit Singh Pamma, today joined the Congress party in presence of the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, along with his supporters. Announcing that only the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, was capable of leading the country under the present circumstances, Mr. Pamma said he would work for the success of the Congress candidates in the forthcoming LoK Sabha polls in Delhi. Ms. Dikshit, while welcoming the Sikh leader into the party fold, said this would further strengthen the party and bond the relationship between the Congress and the Sikh community. Mr. Pamma said at a time when the communal forces were bent upon disturbing the peace and harmony in the country, the Congress could provide the necessary alternative in shape of secular leadership and bring all like-minded parties and people on a single platform. He also applauded the steps taken by the Delhi Government for the welfare of the Sikh community under the leadership of Ms.Dikshit and said the Bharatiya Janata Party had only done lip service for the Sikh community and had exploited them with an eye on their votes.
