Father held for alleged role in drowning of children

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MARCH 28. The rickshaw puller, whose two minor daughters and a son drowned under mysterious circumstances in the river Yamuna at Khajuri Khas in North-East Delhi this past Friday, has been arrested for his suspected involvement in the incident. The police claims to have got some clinching evidence against him.

According to the police, Javed had told them that his four children, Sajid (10), Rani (8), Zahida (6) and Gullo (2) went missing on Friday evening. The same night, the police received a call saying a girl who was drowning in river Yamuna had been rescued by a passer-by. Javed identified the girl as his daughter, Zahida. While she was in an unconscious state, she was rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital.

Later when she regained her senses, Zahida disclosed to the police the truth behind the whole incident. As it turned out, Javed used to have frequent altercations with his wife as he suspected her to be an infidel. On Friday morning, Javed apparently had another round of fight with his wife, after which he went out without having his breakfast. He returned home in the evening and again left around 6-30 p.m. on the pretext of relieving himself. His four children were then playing nearby. Javed took the children along with him for a walk. Upon reaching the riverbank, he threw three of his children into the water and pushed the fourth, Sajid, into the river and waited to see that they were drowned. While three of them were drowned, Zahida escaped by providence. A bystander, who spotted her being swept away with the water flow, rescued her with the help of another person.

While the bodies of two of the deceased -- Rani and Gullo - were recovered on Saturday morning, Sajid's body was fished out today. Further investigations into the matter are on.

It is learnt that during interrogation, Javed has confessed to having murdered his children as bogged down by his differences with his wife, he would often get irritated by their behaviour. A perturbed Javed allegedly decided to eliminate his children, said the police.
