MADURAI, MARCH 28 . After playing truant for two days, sharp showers lashed the city today, bringing a respite from the sweltering heat. While the city recorded 37.5 mm of rainfall, the Madurai Airport registered 5 mm. Though the southern districts have been receiving summer showers for the past two days, the city only experienced mild drizzles. Intermittent showers, which started early morning, continued till 7 a.m. There was water stagnation in low-level areas. The city had been experiencing scorching heat with the maximum temperature hovering around the 40-degree Celsius mark. The rain raised the hopes of the water managers, who were relying on the summer showers to bail them out from an imminent water crisis. The rainfall registered in other places during the last 24 hours is (in mm): the Sathaiyar dam - 30, Viraganoor - 23.1, Mayiladumparai - 19, the Sothuparai dam - 14, Veerapandi - 7, Marudanadi - 5, Uthamapalayam - 3.8, Sittampatti - 2, the Vaigai dam - 1.5, Kuppanampatti and Bodi - 1 each. The level in the Periyar dam was 108.4 feet with a discharge of 100 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam stood at 26.8 feet with an inflow of 29 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 852 mcft.
