Route boards

Sir, — The destination and route boards of city and moffussil buses in Bangalore are only in Kannada.

While top priority should be given to Kannada, the boards should be written in English also to help those who do not know Kannada.

This is important because Bangalore is a metropolitan city and people from all over the country visit the city.

I request the authorities of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to give a serious thought to the suggestion.

V.L. Narayanan,

Bangalore.

Inhuman act

Sir, — This is regarding the announcement of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike that pet dogs will have to be licensed and stray dogs will be rounded up for vaccination and sterilisation.

I saw stray dogs being rounded up in a van of the civic body at the TB Institute at Guttahalli. The heart-rending scene still haunts me. Should we not treat animals in a humane way? Rabies is a dreadful disease and it has to be prevented. There are so many dreadful diseases spread by human beings. Do we treat them in an inhuman way? The dogs were being dragged by their tails and limbs. The animals already caged were howling out of fear. The civic body should find a better way to catch them.

Sudha Narasimhachar,

Bangalore.

Improve library

Sir, — The Government Public Library in Kalyan Nagar 1st Block (HRBR Layout) leaves much to be desired. Although it was opened three years ago, a fulltime librarian has not been appointed yet. Enrolment of members has not begun. Books are heaped in rooms. Owing to non-payment of power bills, power supply is disconnected.

Repeated representations to the authorities concerned have not helped. Will they act at least now?

S. Kuppuswamy and two others,

Bangalore.

Open school

Sir, — Many Union Government staff quarters have come up at Koramangala and H.S.R. Layout. But the employees are finding it difficult to admit their children in good educational institutions. The Kendriya Vidyalayas are situated far from the quarters.

The authorities concerned should take immediate steps to start a Kendriya Vidyalaya near Koramangala and H.S.R. Layout. The timings of these schools should also be revised. Parents find it difficult to send children to school early in the morning.

O. Prabhakaran,

Bangalore.
