Iraq Minister escapes bid on life

MOSUL, MARCH 28. Iraq's interim Public Works Minister, Nasreen Barwari, a Kurd, escaped an assassination attempt today near the northern city of Mosul in which three of her bodyguards were killed.

"Nasreen Barwari escaped an assassination attempt in Al-Karama, east of Mosul, today,'' Major Ragheed Yunes Abdallah said, adding that three of her bodyguards were killed when unknown assailants opened fire with assault rifles on her convoy. The Minister was last week seen seated behind the top U.S. civil administrator, Paul Bremer, when he announced that her Ministry would be among the first four to gain independence from the U.S.-led coalition on April 1. — AFP
