Jethmalani unwilling to contest against PM

MUMBAI, MARCH 29. The former Union Minister, Ram Jethmalani, said today he was not willing to contest against the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in Lucknow in the coming Lok Sabha polls due to "lack of unity among Opposition parties."

``If the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party do not support me, I do not want to contest," Mr. Jethmalani told mediapersons here. He contended that failure of Opposition parties to support his candidature as a common candidate would lead to division of votes. ``I do not want to lose the election." The Congress had declared on Saturday that it would like to support Mr. Jethmalani as a common candidate of Opposition parties against Mr. Vajpayee. — PTI
