Dent in Nagender's hat-trick hopes?

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 29. The former Asifnagar MLA, D. Nagender, is on the horns of a dilemma and seething with anger.

The lone Congressman to win from the twin cities in the 1999 Assembly election, the electoral scenario appears to have dealt him a cruel blow this time around.

A verdict will be out on his electoral fortunes anytime now with the Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, and Mr. Nagender returning from Delhi on Monday evening after a face-off in the All-India Congress Committee durbar.Incidentally, the duo travelled by the same flight to return to the city. Confident of a re-nomination and looking for a hat-trick, Mr. Nagender unexpectedly found himself on a political landmine with the party high command keen on giving away the seat to the Majlis Ittehadul-e-Muslimeen as a friendly gesture.

Mr. Nagender had won twice in 1994 and 1999 from the seat. While the high command asked him to choose between the Secunderabad Parliamentary seat and the Himayatnagar Assembly constituency, Mr. Nagender is said to have turned down the proposals.

Even the bait of an elevation in the form of the Parliamentary segment could not make the former MLA change his mind. The Congress had won the Asifnagar seat seven times of the 12 times it went to polls while the MIM was victorious on four occasions.

Mr. Nagender was unavailable for comment.
