HYDERABAD, MARCH 29. The Congress candidate from the Sanathnagar Assembly constituency, M. Shashidhar Reddy, has described as a sham the announcement of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to restore daily drinking water supply from April 15. "This is nothing but a political ploy by the ruling Telugu Desam Party to garner votes in the elections," he alleged at a press conference here on Monday. The city goes to the polls on April 20, five days after the proposed daily supply of drinking water is to commence. "Isn't the timing suspect? If at all something materialises, I guess they would supply daily drinking water for five days till the poll date," he remarked. To provide drinking water everyday as against the present alternate day supply, he said the HMWSSB would need exactly the double of what it was supplying at present - 140 mgd. "Does it have that kind of inflows? While the Krishna water supply project would bring in an additional 45 mgd, what about the remaining volume of water," he sought to know, adding that the announcement was only an eyewash. "I can only sympathise with HMWSSB officials who are being pressured to make political statements," he said. Mr. Reddy announced that he would be coming out with a CD to present the facts on the drinking water supply position of the twin cities to its residents shortly. The former Minister said the Telugu Desam party, in the guise of development, was trying to mislead people on basic issues, particularly drinking water.
