Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the report, "Regulate surrogate ads, Government tells EC" (March 30). The motives of the TV advertisements issued under the names of `Sajhi Virasat Trust' and `Kamakshi Education Society' are more than clear. The powerful electronic medium, which could have been used by political parties for positive publicity, has been made a platform for mudslinging and slander. This cannot and should not be allowed in the name of `freedom of expression.'
M.C. Joshi,
* * * Sir, The BJP's complaint to the Election Commission about the Congress advertisements suggesting that the Prime Minister was a police informer in 1942 is valid. Considering that he was only 17 years old when the alleged incident took place, the said advertisements are in bad taste. It is rather disturbing that the two main national parties are indulging in personal attacks, one relating to a person's place of birth and the other over an event associated with a person when he was a minor.
A.J. Rangarajan,
* * * Sir, The allegation against Mr. Vajpayee certainly does not seem to be true. But he has accepted that he did not participate in the freedom movement (Frontline, Feb. 20, 1998). He also wriggled out of prosecution by the British Government under Section 149 of the IPC by signing a declaration (along with his brother) saying he only followed a crowd and was not part of the group of freedom fighters. That was when he was 17 and it should not be held against him. But personal attack on individuals was started by the BJP and it cannot complain now.
George Paul,
* * * Sir, Everything is fair in love, war ... and elections. It is better for all issues to be brought into the open for only then can people judge and exercise their choice.
Pradeep Desai,
