Theft at Shantiniketan

Sir, — The theft of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel prize medallion is no doubt unfortunate. But do we really have to get so disturbed over decorations from foreign countries? Tagore, the pride of India, will remain great, scholarly and noble, irrespective of the physical presence of the Nobel prize and the trappings that go with it.

Wg. Cdr. (retd.) S.C. Kapoor,
Noida, U.P.

Sir, — Vishwabharati University claims that there was no compromise in the security arrangements at the Tagore Museum. How did the theft take place then? It is incredible that in the museum that contains such priceless artefacts there was no modern burglar alarm system.

T.M. Sundararaman,
Chennai

Sir, — No one ever thought that Tagore's treasures would go this way. It was considered a national asset. Perhaps the persons who took it away thought they are implementing the policy of disinvestment and privatisation which is the latest bug affecting the nation. We appeal to their conscience to return the people's property.

N.G.R. Prasad,
Chennai
