Pulse polio drive from April 4 to 7

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, MARCH 30. The third round of the nationwide intensive pulse-polio programme will be taken up in the district from April 4 to 7. The target is to immunise over 4.86 lakh children aged below five.

Basavaraj Dhanappa, District Health Officer; and Ravindra and Ramesh Masti, coordinators of the United Nations International Children's Education Fund told presspersons here on Tuesday that pulse-polio drops would be administered in two phases — through booths on April 4 and on house-to-house basis on the following days — as in the previous rounds.

Dr. Dhanappa said cases of polio had not been reported in the six months after three reported ill with the disease in the district.

A case was reported in Raichur district in 2004. Three cases were reported in Bihar, and one each in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh this year.

He said anganwadi workers, members of non-governmental organisations, Sree Shakti groups and the Azim Premji Foundation, and he National Cadet Corps and the National Service Scheme volunteers were being involved in the programme. In 2003, the first round of the programme was held from July 27 to 29 and the follow-up round from September 7 to 9.

This year, the first and second rounds were held during January and February. More than 1,828 teams had been formed to take up the programme in the district. The 86 mobile teams would be located in markets and the railway and bus stations. A total of 3,994 staff from various departments and 385 supervisors would take part in the drive.

He said the number of people who refused to allow administration of the polio drops to their children came down from 225 to 118 during the last drive. There were 47 such cases in the city, 14 in Shahapur, 13 in Jewargi, Chitapur and Surpur, eight in Chincholi, five in Gulbarga Rural, two each in Afsalpur and Sedam, and one in Yadgir.
