Irate commuters' stir for facilities holds up train

By Our Staff Reporter

KULITHALAI, MARCH 30 . Irate commuters, demanding additional coaches and toilet facilities in the trains running in the Karur-Tiruchi sector, staged a rail roko blocking the Tiruchi-Erode passenger train at the Thimmachipuram station near here today. The train was held up for nearly 30 minutes as the commuters, mostly college students, bound for Tiruchi and workers in the textile units in Karur staged the demonstration.

The Diesel Electrical Multiple Units (DEMU), which ply on the route, do not have toilet facilities and the travelling public have been demanding since the DEMU introduction in the sector that they be withdrawn as they were said to be inconvenient to the sick and the elderly passengers. Also, the trains running in the sector would be overflowing with commuters during rush hours, necessitating additional coaches.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kulithalai, A. Nithyanandam, and railway officials rushed to the spot and pacified the crowd. The protestors withdrew their agitation after the officials assured them to convey their feelings to the railway authorities concerned.
