BANGALORE, MARCH 30. Even as the second year Pre-University examinations commenced in 615 centres across the State today, 24 students were debarred from the examinations by the Department of Pre-University Education for alleged malpractice. In all, 14 cases of malpractice were reported from Bijapur district, four from Bangalore South, three from Bagalkot, two from Tumkur, and one from Bidar. There were no other untoward incidents, according to the Pre-University Education Director, D.N. Nayak. Examinations were held in Chemistry, Logic and Education Part-I. The department had posted 58 mobile vigilance squads to conduct surprise checks at the examination centres. The malpractice cases were detected by these squads. About 70,000 students appeared for the Chemistry paper. As many as 4.32 lakh students will take the examinations, including 2 lakh from the arts stream, 1.31 lakh from the commerce stream and 72,103 students from the science stream. Examination centres across Bangalore were swarming with students making last-minute preparations. Some had come with their parents. Groups of students were seen in animated discussion.
