Partly cloudy day ahead

NEW DELHI MARCH 31. A partly cloudy sky has been forecast for Delhi on Thursday with the maximum temperature expected to be around 37 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded at Safdarjung on Wednesday were 37.2 and 17.2 degrees Celsius respectively. Palam recorded a maximum of 37 degrees Celsius and minimum of 17.6 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum relative humidity at Safdarjung was 60 per cent and 9 per cent respectively while at Palam it was 66 per cent and 11 per cent respectively.

Electoral rolls in Urdu

NEW DELHI MARCH 31. For the first time, copies of the electoral rolls published in Urdu would be put up at all the polling booths in the Capital where there are a sizeable number of Urdu-speaking voters.

Following a direction in this regard by the Election Commission, one copy of the electoral rolls in Urdu would be kept at each of the polling booths in the Assembly constituencies of Okhla, Seelampur, Seemapuri, Qarawal Nagar, Sadar Paharganj, Matia Mahal and Balli Maran, sources said.

Scribe dead

NEW DELHI MARCH 31. Senior journalist and former Senior Assistant Editor of Saptahik Hindustan, Narendra Vidyavachaspati, passed away at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Monday after three months of illness. He was 85.

He is survived by his wife, Sumedha Vidyalankar, a Sanskrit scholar, son Rajiv Kumar, Sports Editor with Hindustan, and daughter Ruchi Tyagi, who is a Reader in Kalindi College.

After receiving his degree of Vidyavachaspati from Gurukul Kangri in Hardwar, he started his career in journalism with Daily Lokmanya. Thereafter, he worked for numerous magazines and newspapers such as monthly Pratibha, Chhaya from Mumbai, Arya Sewak from Nagpur and Arya Sandesh from Delhi. He was also associated with the All-India Congress Committee as the Editor of weekly magazine Varnika.

A condolence meeting will be held in his memory at his B-22 Gulmohar Park residence from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 1.

Protest

NEW DELHI MARCH 31. A large number of employees of Delhi Transport Corporation under the banner of DTC Workers' Unity Centre today held a sit-in demonstration at the office of the Regional Manager (East) at Nand Nagri Depot to protest against the attempts by the Delhi Government to privatise DTC and also to press for their demands, which include timely payment of salaries.

Shot at

NEW DELHI MARCH 31. An iron merchant was shot at an injured by unknown assailants in the Y-Block Loha Mandi at Naraina in South West Delhi this evening.

The police said the victim, 25-year-old Ashish Gupta, was a resident of Rana Pratap Bagh and owned an iron business in Naraina. After closing his shop at around 8 this evening, he was walking to his car when some unknown persons shot at him.

The bullet hit Ashish in the stomach and he collapsed. Subsequently, he was taken to Ganga Ram Hospital where he was still "unfit for statement".
