dated April 2, 1954: 31 die in train blast

Thirty-one persons were killed and 35 injured as a result of an explosion in a third class bogie of the 313 Katihar-Kanpur Express at Jagatbela station near Gorakhpur at 8.33 p.m. on March 31. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, according to the railway authorities. As a result of the explosion, 28 persons were killed on the spot including five policemen who were carrying ammunition and 35 were injured of whom 16 were serious cases. Of these 16, three died on the way to hospital.
