ANKARA, APRIL 1. Security forces in Turkey, Germany, Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands carried out coordinated crackdowns early on Thursday against a Marxist Turkish group that the European Union and the United States consider a terrorist organisation, arresting 41 suspected militants, Turkey's Interior Ministry said. Turkish and German police have been preparing for the crackdown for the past year and later Italian police were involved in the investigation, the official said. Terror experts said the sweep was the result of increased cooperation between European security forces in the run-up to the Athens Olympics. Turkey has been pressing European countries for years to clamp down on radical leftist, Islamic and Kurdish groups. Police in Istanbul arrested 25 suspected militants while security forces in the other countries detained 16 other suspects, an Interior Ministry official said, speaking on customary condition of anonymity.
