Tall claim?

Sir, — The BJP claims that the NDA Government, of which it is the main constituent, has achieved more in its short spell of five years, and derides the Congress' governance of four decades. It was the Congress, which, under Jawaharlal Nehru, set the path of our country on the solid ground of democracy, secularism and socialism for all time to come. This is an unsurpassable achievement.

R. Natarajan,

Chennai

Sir, — Congress Governments had to work hard to build a nation from the ruins of a colonial era. They had to unite the nation under one banner to achieve development amid the poverty-stricken millions. What they did was real nation-building. The NDA election managers have unleashed a false campaign claiming development in the field of telecommunication, infrastructure and so on. All these are a continuation of the previous regimes.

K.J. Shaji,

Wayanad, Kerala

Sir, — But for Nehru, India would not have been on the world's industrial map. It was under the Congress regime that private banks were nationalised and this contributed to nation-building in a big way. If India is a colossus in software industry today, it is because of the Congress.

H. Ghouse Baig,

Tiruchi, T.N.
