Election scene

Sir, — Besides the advent of film stars, the political scene has been made more colourful with disgruntled politicians switching loyalties. A case in point is Kumar Bangarappa of Karnataka who switched parties two times in as many months, all for the ticket. Political parties have become buses and politicians passengers. If a passenger fails to get the ticket, he/she is left with no alternative but to board another bus.

Vasudev Bhat,

Udupi, Karnataka

Sir, — All the parties are welcoming all and sundry into their fold. There is neither any ideology nor any principle involved. Only `winnability' and `ability to garner votes' count.

S. Elaya Kumar,

Vellore, T.N.

Sir, — That the politicians are using intemperate language in their quest for power is disturbing. The unsavoury jibes, degenerating into personal attacks on political opponents, particularly in the media, are a sure cause for concern. It is clear from all this that the fundamentalist overtones of both the secular and communal kind much be eschewed.

Pradeep Desai,

Chennai
