Letters to the Editor
Sir, The controversy surrounding the marital status of Femina Miss India, Lakshmi Pandit, which has resulted in her returning her crown, shows how far people can go to fulfil their ambitions. Unless the organisers clear things at the earliest, the episode will cast doubts on the validity of such pageants. Noyon Jyoti Parasara, Bangalore * * * Sir, The incident has exposed the discrimination against married women. Perhaps, the world body that conducts such pageants should rethink. If American air-hostesses can be grandmothers, beauty queens can at least be wives. Lakshmi Vishwanathan, Chennai * * * Sir, What has happened is unfortunate. But do the media, particularly TV channels, have to hype the issue so much? The world's largest democracy that is going to the polls to usher in a new era of development should have a more responsible media with the right priorities. Azad Singh Bali, Chennai
