Garment exporters seek relief

COIMBATORE: Garment exporters have sought immediate steps to help them out as they are hit by the appreciation of Indian rupee against dollar. In a memorandum to the Union Finance Minister, the Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), A. Sakthivel, has said that most of the garment export contracts were in dollar terms and hence, the industry has been hit. The rupee has appreciated by 9.04 per cent to the dollar between January 2002 and March 2004. Mr. Sakthivel pointed out that due to the appreciation of Indian rupee, the garment exporters were finding it difficult to compete in the international apparel market.
