New ESI ceiling

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. The Employees' State Insurance Corporation has enhanced the wage ceiling for the purpose of coverage of employees under the ESI scheme from the existing Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 7,500 per month. The new wage ceiling came into force from today (Thursday).

The enhancement of wage ceiling follows the notification by the Central Government subsequent to the decision taken by the Corporation at its meeting on December 16. The upward revision of the wage ceiling by Rs. 1,000 is expected to recover over four lakh additional employees who had gone out of the social security net over the last few years. The existing wage ceiling of Rs. 6,500 that had been in force since January 1, 1997.

Bank extension counter

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. Punjab and Sind Bank has opened its new extension counter at "Heart and Lung Institute''. This was inaugurated by the Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank, V. K. Chopra, on Thursday.

According to a Punjab and Sind Bank release, this was the 31st extension counter of the bank in the Capital. The bank has a network of 759 branches across the country besides 132 extension counters.

Black day observed

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. The Confederation of All India Traders has opposed the unit area method of implementation of house tax which came into force from today and observed black day by staging a demonstration at the MCD headquarters, Town Hall.

According to Mr. Praveen Khandelwal, president of the Confederation, the unit area method will not only encourage corruption but also force many Delhi citizens to leave the Capital.

Tips for students

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. The Pitampura-based Rukmini Devi Public School organised an orientation programme for class X and XII on Thursday. The school principal, Anita Garg, exhorted the students to persevere and do hard work as according to her, it was the only mantra of success.

On the occasion, the senior school co-ordinator gave valuable tips on studying effectively and on time management. She also suggested that the students should form study circles to enhance their academic performance.

New director for BHEL


NEW DELHI APRIL 1. On his appointment as Director on the Board of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), A.K. Puri has assumed charge as Director (Power) of the public sector engineering and manufacturing enterprise.

"Earlier during his tenure as Executive Director - Power Sector (Marketing) of BHEL, an all-time high order booking of over Rs.12,000 crores was achieved in power sector business during the last fiscal 2003-04," according to a spokesperson of BHEL here today.

Radio programme

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. As the countdown for the 14th Lok Sabha elections begins, Radio City 91 FM has announced the launch of "Janta Jagao, Desh Hilao'' which will engage listeners in the election process through a series of innovative, informative, exciting and exclusive programmes. Spread over five weeks, the programme can be heard in Radio City stations in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Lucknow.

Women Achievers' show

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. Some of the city's well-known women will be seen in an unusual garb at Fem Women Achievers show scheduled for April 3 at Hyatt Regency. The annual charity event travels to New Delhi after shows in Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The likes of Samantha Kochar, Illoosh Ahluwalia, Kiran Segal, Shallu Jindal, Sushma Seth and Anita Basu will share the ramp in support of the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA). The show will be choreographed by Hemant Trivedi and the saris have been designed by N.C.Shaina to suit the personalities of each one of the participant achievers.

Self-defence skills

NEW DELHI APRIL 1. Amid rising crime against women in the national capital, the Delhi police have trained a fresh batch of 97 girls to enable them to defend themselves against eve teasers and ``wayward husbands''.

The girls of Birla Vidya Niketan School in South Delhi today demonstrated their self-defence techniques including judo and karate before the Police Commissioner, K. K. Paul, today. The girls, who were trained in martial arts by Delhi Police's Crime Against Women (CAW) cell for 15 days, showed how innocuous objects such as books, 'dupattas', bags and pens could be used as weapons.
