CHENNAI, APRIL 1. The Examinations department is making efforts to release the results of Standard X (SSLC/Matriculation and Anglo-Indian Schools) examinations by May 30, the Director of Government Examinations, C. Palanivelu, said today. Addressing mediapersons in the 130-year-old Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School, Egmore here, the Director said: ``This year the examinations are starting today but last year, it began on March 27. Notwithstanding the four-day lag, the department is hopeful of releasing the results on May 30, the same day as last year.'' The SSLC examinations would end on April 15 and the Matriculation and Anglo-Indian School examinations the next day. Answer papers would be taken to valuation centres for starting ``valuation camps'', he said. This time the number of teachers evaluating the papers as well as the number of valuation centres were being increased. ``We want to ensure an error, irregularities-free examinations this year. To avoid any complaints of mass copying, we have mixed students of different streams and accommodated them in the same school,'' Dr. Palanivelu said. He appealed to the students to approach the examination ``with honesty''. The Director of Matriculation Schools and Teacher Education, Research and Training, R. Narayanasamy, said the department had taken efforts to ensure that schools did not stop any candidate from taking the examination. (Some schools have been found to stop poor performing students from writing public examinations, to ultimately show a high pass percentage, department sources note). On unrecognised matriculation schools, Mr. Narayanasamy said students from such schools were accommodated (for writing the examinations) in recognised institutions. The Directorate also sent notices to schools, which had sought to send students to the examinations. Dr. Palanivelu said the directorate had prepared a `nominal roll' of Standard X students for each school in September last. It was updated in January. ``Before the examination we found problems in the rolls in about 250 institutions, as some names were missing. We called the institution heads to explain the ``missing names''. In most cases, the students opted out of the examination for genuine reasons. Still, in about 30 cases, we intervened to ensure that the students were not stopped from writing the examinations.'' Mr. Narayanasamy said the inspectorates of matriculation schools were following the issue closely.
