Congress undeterred, says former MP

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, APRIL 1. The defection of former Congress MLAs, including, A. Dodde Gowda, will not harm the prospects of the party in any way, the former MP, G. Puttaswamy Gowda, has said. He told presspersons at Holenarsipura on Wednesday that Mr. Dodde Gowda had betrayed himself by deciding to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said he was instrumental in nominating Mr. Dodde Gowda to contest from Holenarsipura Assembly Constituency in the previous election.

It was natural for every aspirant to desire re-nomination, but the party had to take many factors into consideration. Instead of supporting the party that helped him, Mr. Dodde Gowda changed his loyalty, which would only help the Janata Dal (Secular). Reacting to many former MLAs leaving the party, Mr. Putteswamy Gowda said it was not unusual during the election. But the leaving the party after enjoying power reflected an individual's morality, he said. The defection of the former MLAs, including Gurudev, A.T. Ramaswamy, and Mr. Dodde Gowda would not affect the chances of the Congress, as many from the Janata Dal (Secular) had joined the Congress in the past one week. He said the party had offered to nominate Mr. Dodde Gowda to the Legislative Council, but the latter did not respond.
