By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 1. The Jain Maha Sangh has appealed to the State Government to declare holiday for Mahaveer Jayanthi. The Government recently removed Mahaveer Jayanthi from its list of holidays.

"At least from next year, the authorities should declare holiday," Kailashmal Dugar, Sangh secretary, told reporters here on Wednesday. (The Jayanthi falls on April 3).

Mr. Dugar said Mahaveer Jayanthi should be observed as `vegetarianism day'.

A procession would be taken out from Aradhana Bhawan, Mint Street, to Jain Dadawadi on Konnur High Road, Ayanavaram. It would pass through Audiappa Naicken Street, Salt Cotaurs, Perambur Barracks Road and Strahans Road.

Besides the rally and a public meeting, free lunch would be provided to 1, 500 inmates of the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk. This is to be organised by People for People, a charitable trust along with the sangh.

The Adinath Jain Trust has organised a free artificial limb camp at Maloo Jain Bhavan, Choolai, where about 7,000 people from all over the State participated. They were provided with wheel chairs and tricycles and artificial limbs, collectively worth Rs. 2 crores. About 3,000 more people were likely to be benefited from the ten-day camp, which would continue till April 3, said the trustee, Manoj Jain.
