Man arrested for `land grabbing'

NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. A 55-year-old man has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi police for allegedly grabbing the land of his 80-year-old sister by forging her signature on property related documents.

According to the police, Satyawati, a resident of Burari in North Delhi, had lodged a complaint saying that her cousin Surender Singh had grabbed her land fraudulently. Investigations revealed that Satyawati owned one-third of the 158 bighas of land at Salempur Majra in Burari, while the rest was owned by Surender and other family members. Surender was the care-taker of her share of land.

Sometime ago, Surender had also helped Satyawati sell another property to one Jagat Thakur and it was around this time that he had prepared a fake general power of attorney certificate by forging his sister's signature, the police said.

Subsequently, he got her share transferred in his name. Some other family members also benefited in the fraudulent deal as they had been named as joint owners. The police got the forged signature compared with the specimen and found out that the signatures were indeed forged. Subsequently, police arrested Surender.

During interrogation, Surender told the police that he had forged the signatures and had posed as a witness of the property transfer in the office of tehsildar. He also produced fake power of attorney certificate to claim that his sister had authorised him to carry out the transfer.
