Fernandes to launch campaign

CHITRADURGAUDUPISHIMOGAMANGALORE, APRIL 2.APRIL 2.APRI The election campaign of the National Democratic Alliance in Chitradurga district will be inaugurated by the Defence Minister and Convener of the NDA, George Fernandes, at Bharama Sagara on Saturday.

Making the announcement at a press conference at Bharama Sagara, about 40 km. from here, on Friday, B.T. Channabasappa, district unit president of the Janata Dal (United), hoped that the party would retain the Bharama Sagara Assembly segment. "The main aim of the party unit is to retain the seat and defeat Shamanoor Shivashankarappa and his son, S.S. Mallikarjuna in Davanagere constituencies,'' he said. Mr. Fernandes would introduce H. Anjaneya, who joined the party recently and filed nomination papers for the Bharama Sagara seat, to the party workers. Later, Mr. Fernandes would address a rally.

Earlier, addressing workers of the Janata Dal (U), Mr. Channabasappa assured them that the seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP would last. "We shall not give any scope for ill-feeling or mistrust between the BJP and the Janata Dal (United),'' he said.

Protect India's character: Moily

CHITRADURGAUDUPISHIMOGAMANGALORE, APRIL 2.APRIL 2.APRI The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, said on Friday that it was essential to maintain the multi-cultural ethos of the country. He was speaking at a public meeting organised by the Block Congress Committee at Karkala.

He accused the National Democratic Alliance Government at the Centre of sowing the seeds of mistrust among the people. He said that the Bharatiya Janata Party should remember that Lord Ram was a symbol of peace. It was not possible to rule a country as vast as India with theocratic notions. Only communal harmony would set the country on the path of progress, he added.

Mr. Moily ridiculed the BJP's claim that the country had made great progress during its rule and said unemployment had increased. Speaking about the Congress Government in the State, he said it had introduced land reforms and land regularisation programmes, and the Common Entrance Test for admission to professional colleges.

The Congress leader, B.L. Shankar, spoke. The former MLA for Karkala, Gopal Bhandary, the Vice-President of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, H. Prasanna Ballal, and other Congress leaders, were present.
