Don't appeal against court order: consumer council

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, APRIL 2 . The Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, has urged the Corporation not to go on appeal against the order of the Second Additional District Munsif, restraining it from collecting Rs.6, 000 for the underground drainage scheme.

The court allowed the Corporation to collect Rs.2, 000 as deposits, and the civic body should abide by the directive, the Council said in a resolution adopted at its executive committee meeting held here on Wednesday.

The meeting said the deposits should be based on the usage charges, and there was no rationale behind fixing Rs. 6,000. The Corporation should not try to mop up its share of the project cost through deposits alone, and instead explore other means.

The Council said it was unfair on the part of the Corporation to demand additional deposits from the residents who had already obtained underground drainage connections during the 1980s by paying Rs. 2, 000. The amount should be collected only from those seeking new connections.

Through other resolutions, the meeting requested the district administration to expedite the construction of the road overbridge at Palakkarai and prevent encroachments under the Thennur overbridge. A public garden, it suggested, could be set up at the vacant space.

The secretary, S. Pushpavanam, and others spoke.

The Federation of Former Councillors of Tamil Nadu, which successfully contested the Corporation's decision in the District Munsif Court, has said it is planning to seek legal remedy on behalf of the residents who have already paid additional deposits.

In a statement here, the president, R.C. Babu, said the Federation planned to approach the court, seeking the refund of additional deposits paid by those who already had drainage connections, in the light of the order of the Second Additional District Munsif.
