Jayalalithaa greets Jains

CHENNAI, APRIL 2. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today said peace and tranquillity would prevail in the world if the all-time relevant teachings of Bhagwan Mahaveer were followed. In a message on the eve of Mahaveer Jayanthi, to be observed tomorrow, she said the teachings of the 24th Jain Theerthankara, stressing love, non-violence and righteousness, were essential for the progress of the human race.

She extended greetings to all the people, who belonged to Jainism and those who followed the teachings of Mahaveer.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K.Vasan, has appealed to the people to take a vow on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanthi to instal a secular Government at the Centre. The teachings of the Theerthankara, who showed to the world that love alone was a powerful weapon, should be followed by one and all.

All retail Indian-Made Foreign Liquor outlets would remain closed in Chennai district tomorrow in view of Mahaveer Jayanthi. There should be no sale of liquor tomorrow. Stern action would be taken against those who violated the order, the Collector, V.Kannuchamy, said in a statement here.
