`Sharief played spoilsport'

Bangalore April 2. Sources in the State Congress have blamed the party's candidate for the Bangalore North Lok Sabha seat, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, for the confusion over the candidate for the Shantinagar (Reserved) Constituency in Bangalore. The two Congress candidates named for the constituency, M. Muniswamy and V. Shankar, clashed in front of the returning officer for the constituency at the Mayo Hall on Friday. It is said that some of their supporters also exchanged blows. Mr. Sharief has been given a free hand by the party in the selection of candidates for the eight Assembly segments in his parliamentary seat. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) selected Mr. Shankar for the seat in its list of candidates released on March 29. Later in the day, the party decided to field Mr. Muniswamy, member of the dissolved Assembly, for the seat. However, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) issued `B' form to both of them.

53 debarred from PU exam.

Bangalore April 2. Fifty-three students across the State were debarred from writing their Pre-University (PU) examinations today, the fourth day, which had examinations in Biology Part I, Business Studies and Kannada Additional. Officials with the PU Education Board here told The Hindu that Bagalkot had the highest number of 12 malpractice cases, followed by Raichur with 11; Gulbarga with eight; Bangalore South, Bidar and Bijapur with six each; and Belgaum with three cases. Davangere and Chitradurga districts recorded one case each, the officials added. The PU examinations end on April 15.

Krishna extends greetings

BANGALORE April 2. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has greeted the people of the State on the occasion of Mahaveera Jayanti. In a message, he said: "Mahaveera advocated the observation of principles of non-violence and sympathy for all forms of life. Let the celebration of Mahaveera Jayanti inspire us to follow these principles of eternal relevance."

Ashok Kini takes charge as MD

Bangalore April 2. Ashok Kini has taken charge as Managing Director and Group Executive (National Banking) of State Bank of India (SBI). Till recently he was Deputy Managing Director, Information Technology, and was responsible for drawing up the blueprint for SBI's technology plan and its implementation. Mr. Kini, a postgraduate from Madras Christian College, joined SBI in 1967. He started SBI's ATM network in the early 1990s, which had now grown into the largest in the country.

JD(U) leaders join Congress

BANGALORE April 2. Some of the office-bearers of the Bangalore City units of the Janata Dal (United) and the Janata Dal (Secular) joined the Congress party here today. Those who joined from the Janata Dal (U) were A. Lokesh Gowda, President of the unit, C. Narayanaswamy, General Secretary, and Narayanarao Bhojagade, Satyanarayana Rao and Anthony Joseph, office-bearers. Those who joined the Congress from the Janata Dal (S) were Anand, Senior Vice-President, Jayamahal constituency, and Muniswamy, former councillor, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. All of them joined the party in the presence of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, the Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries, R.V. Deshpande, and the former Minister, R. Roshan Baig, at the Congress Bhavan here.

Likely to join BJP

DAVANGERE April 2. Nagamma Keshavamurthy, who resigned from the Congress party on Thursday, is likely to join the BJP in a day or two. Senior leaders of the BJP district unit, including Siddesh, who is contesting the Davangere Lok Sabha seat and S.A. Ravindranath, who represented Mayakonda in the dissolved Assembly, reportedly met Ms. Keshavamurthy and invited her to join the party on behalf of the State unit leaders. Ms. Keshavamurthy, who was associated with the Congress for more than three decades, was disappointed when she was deprived of the party ticket to contest the Assembly elections from Mayakonda constituency. Leaders of the Janata Dal (S) and the Janata Party also reportedly met Ms. Keshavamurthy and invited her to join their party.

Congress changes candidate

BANGALORE April 2. The Congress has changed its candidate in the Shantinagar (SC) Assembly constituency in Bangalore for the second time. It has now decided to field V. Shankar as the official candidate instead of the member of the dissolved Assembly, M. Muniswamy. Mr. Shankar's name had figured in the first list. But he was replaced by Mr. Muniswamy. Addressing presspersons at the Congress Bhavan here today, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, said the central election committee of the party had nominated Mr. Shankar. Mr. Poojary regretted the confusion and said it could have been avoided by the All-India Congress Committee (AICC). The party's `B' form would be given to Mr. Shankar, he said. However, according to Congress sources, the change of the candidate for Shantinagar was effected by the party's candidate for the Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency C.K. Jaffer Sharief. He had been given a free hand in the selection of candidates for the eight Assembly segments in his Lok Sabha constituency, sources said.

Kagodu files nomination

SHIMOGA April 2. The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, is among the seven candidates who filed their nomination papers today for the Assembly elections. Mr. Thimmappa, who is seeking re-election for the fourth time as the Congress candidate from Sagar constituency, filed three sets of the nomination papers. G.D. Narayanappa, member of the dissolved Assembly representing Hosnagar constituency, and the former Minister, G. Basavannappa who recently joined the BJP, filed their nomination papers for Hosnagar and Holehonnur (reserved) constituencies, respectively. Other candidates who filed their nomination papers today were M. Manjunath (BJP), and G. Shankaramma and S. Siddappaji (independents) for Bhadravati constituency and K. Venkatappa (independent) for Shikaripur constituency. No nomination papers were filed today for the Lok Sabha election from Shimoga constituency.

Joins BJP

HASSAN April 2. The Congress leader, Maruvanahalli Range Gowda, who has been denied nomination from Shravanabelagola Assembly Constituency joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday.

He said after having been in the Congress for 35 years, his work had not been recognised and he was frustrated with the behaviour of Revenue Minister, H.C. Srikantaiah. Another leader, C. V. Rajappa who joined the BJP recently said that he left the Congress as the situation was suffocating.

Water supply

SHIMOGA April 2. The Shimoga City Municipal Council will start supplying drinking water to Shimoga on alternate days from Saturday in view of the restricted water supply to the Krishnaraj Water Treatment Plant following depletion of the water level in the Tunga, which is the main source of water supply to the city.

The Municipal Commissioner, S.P. Mudhol, has appealed to the people to use water judiciously.

UTI Bank

HASSAN April 2. UTI Bank has opened its branch in Hassan on Friday. The Chairman and Managing Director of the bank, P.J. Nayak, inaugurated the branch. Dr. Nayak said that opening the branch was another step towards the extensive consumer banking that the bank had been providing across the country and reinforced its commitment to bring superior banking services.

He said the bank had a network of 189 branches, 64 extension counters. and over 1,240 ATMs across the country.

Poll observer

SHIMOGA April 2. The Election Commission of India has appointed Mahendra Surana as the Election Observer for the Shimoga Lok Sabha Constituency. He will also oversee the elections in the eight Assembly segments of the Lok Sabha Constituency.

Mr. Surana, who will arrive here on Sunday, will stay at the Circuit House. He may be contacted on Ph: (08182) 226467 in connection with matters relating to the elections, according to the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, Tushar Girinath.

File papers

DHARWAD April 2. Two independent candidates filed their nomination papers for the Dharwad North Lok Sabha Constituency and the Kalghatgi Assembly Constituency on Friday.

C.S. Kusugal (Dharwad North Lok Sabha Constituency) and Ramappa Yellappa Bandivaddar (Kalghatgi Assembly Constituency) are the candidates.

Arrested

HASSAN April 2. The police have arrested two persons who appeared in the Second Pre-University Examination incognito on March 31. The Principal of the Government Pre-University College, Santhepet, B.N. Ramaswamy, said in a release here on Friday that Mahesh and Umesh had appeared on behalf of Madhu and Chikkanna at Centre No. 4223 to write English language paper.

Dies of injuries

MADIKERI April 2. Chowrira Bopanna (23), an employee of Sagar Automobiles showroom, died of injuries after his motorcycle was hit by another vehicle at Hoddur, 20 km from here on Thursday. Bopanna was riding the motorcycle from Murnad, sources said. He died near Puttur while being taken to Mangalore, they added.

The police have registered a case.

Drowned

SIRSI April 2. Uday Ganapati Hegde (14) of Hitlalli village, a student of Manchikeri Rajarajeshwari High School, drowned at the Shivaganga Falls near Sirsi on Wednesday.

It is learnt that Uday had gone to the falls with his friends on a trip. Investigation is on.

Water on alternate days

SHIMOGA APRIL 2. Postponed

SHIMOGA APRIL 2. A seminar on "Digital Resources and Services in Libraries" scheduled to be held on April 12 and April 13 as part of the Kuvempu birth centenary celebrations and the decennial year celebrations of the Department of Library and Information Science of Kuvempu University will now be held from April 30.

This has been done as most librarians and teachers of Library and Information Science will be drawn for poll duty during the elections to the Lok Sabha and the Assembly in the State, according to a release.

Tax rebate

SHIMOGA APRIL 2. The Municipal Commissioner, S.P. Mudhol, has in a press release said that taxpayers will get a five per cent rebate if they pay property tax for 2004-2005 under the Self-assessment Scheme for property tax before April 30.

He has said two per cent penalty will be levied every month from April this year for delayed payment of tax for 2002-2003 and 2003 and 2004. He has appealed to taxpayers to cooperate with the Municipal Council.

Desecrated

MADIKERI APRIL 2. A statue of St. Antony was reportedly desecrated at Arji village near Virajpet in Kodagu district on Thursday.

The Superintendent of Police, Devajyoti Ray, who rushed to the spot on Friday, told The Hindu over telephone that miscreants, who probably were drunk and came from a cinema, might have indulged in the act.

He said he had spoken to the church authorities and that there was no cause for tension.

Cancer detection clinic

MYSORE APRIL 2 . Rotary Royal Mysore will conduct a six-day free cancer detection clinic at Preethi Cancer Centre, M.G. Road, Lakshmipram, from April 5.

A press release said those with the symptoms of cancer such as abnormal bleeding, ulcer or lump in any part of the body or sore throat for more than a month could attend the camp. Those interested may call 5259259.

Exhibition

MYSORE APRIL 2. Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, in association with Mysore Green Club, will organise "Keeta Prapancha", an exhibition of insects, from April 18.

A press release said specimens of over 500 insects would be on display. An exhibition of photographs on insects would also be organised. The main objective of the exhibition was to popularise entomology, it added.

Photographs can be sent to Shivanna, Manager, Mysore Zoo, before April 16.

Lecture

MYSORE APRIL 2 . The vice-president (Technical Services), Gujarat Ambuja Cements, Cyrus M. Dordi, will deliver a lecture on "Thirty years of journey through the concrete jungle" on April 6.

A press release said the lecture was being organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Engineering, and the Torsteel Research Foundation as part of NIE Golden Jubilee Endowment series. The lecture would be held at the NIE Seminar Hall at 4.30 p.m., the release added.

Unscheduled power cut

MANGALORE APRIL 2. There will be an unscheduled power cut for six hours in urban areas and 12 hours in rural areas of Udupi district from April 6 to April 8 because of an emergency work, according to a press release from Mangalore Electricity Supply Company here. Power supply will be disrupted as Karnataka Power Transmission Company Limited will take up work at the 110 kV power station at Muttina Koppa.

Workshop

MANGALORE APRIL 2. The Karavali College in the city will host a workshop on "Human rights in India'' on April 4, according to a release. Ravindranath Shanbhog, a consumer rights activist, and A. Rajendra Shetty, principal, SDM Law College, will participate in the inaugural function.

Drama

MANGALORE APRIL 2. The Catholic Action League in the city will host two mega plays on the St. Agnes Special School Grounds on April 4 to mark the occasion of the league completing 70 years this year, according to a release.

Over 150 artistes will participate in the plays. One play is based on the life of Mother Teresa and the other on the life of the early inhabitants of the African forests. Each play will last one hour starting at 6.30 p.m.

AIR timings

MANGALORE APRIL 2. Akashavani, Mangalore, will extend its morning transmission by 20 minutes from April 4.

The morning transmission will conclude at 9.35 a.m. instead of 9.15 a.m. Film songs will be broadcast during this period. There will be a 10-minute "kavya vachana'' programme on Sundays at 1.20 p.m. From Monday to Saturday folk songs and devotional songs will be broadcast for 10 minutes from 1.20 p.m.

From 1.30 p.m. to 2 p.m., film songs will be broadcast during these days.

Jatra

MANGALORE APRIL 2. The annual "jatra" of Mahalingehswara Temple at Puttur will be held from April 10 to April 18. The Assistant Commissioner of Puttur, Subraya Nayak, held a meeting of officials in this connection recently. The trustees of the temple also participated in the meeting.

Yakshagana

MANGALORE APRIL 2. Blind students of the Sharada Devi Andhara Vikasa Kendra, Shimoga, will present Yakshagana performances in various places of Dakshina Kannada from April 7 to April 20, according to a release. The performances will be held at Uppinangady on April 7, at Kateel on April 8, at Katipalla on April 9, at Odiyur on April 10, at the Town Hall in Mangalore on April 11, at Kadri on April 12, at Mangaladevi Temple on April 16, at Gurupura on April 17, at Manila on April 18, at Alankar on April 19 and at Polali on April 20. Kodla Ganapahti Bhat will direct the episodes.
