Miandad's six galvanised emotions

LONDON: Javed Miandad's last ball six in Sharjah in 1986 may have done the most towards generating fever pitch excitement about an Indo-Pak series, says a new study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) this week. Researchers analysing how India and Pakistan fared against each other in cricket between 1952 and 2003 have suggested that Miandad's huge pull over the mid-wicket may have galvanised the emotions of these two nations in a manner unparalleled in sport.

Analysing the 133 matches between 1952 and 2003 before and after that one shot in 1986, the researchers have concluded that overall, Pakistan was more likely to win after Miandad's six.

The data collected suggests that in the one-day matches, Miandad's six caused an improvement in Pakistan's performance or a decline in India's, or both, but this effect was small in Test cricket.
