Support for DPA

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, APRIL 2. The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has decided to support the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in the Lok Sabha poll.

A delegation led by the Tamil Nadu zonal unit president, H. Abdur Raqeeb, on Tuesday called on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief, M. Karunanidhi, and conveyed the decision. ``The DMK president has been apprised of the fact that the JIH is campaigning all over the country so that the secular, non-communal and democratic parties win this crucial election'', the organisation said in a press release here.

The delegation, which handed over a copy to Mr. Karunanidhi of the ``People's Manifesto'' prepared by the JIH sought his support for its demands. It lauded the DMK manifesto as it condemned the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the anti-conversion law, besides favouring poverty alleviation measures and the demand for reservation for Muslims.

A team of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), led by its president, M.H. Zavahirullah, today met Mr. Karunanidhi and assured him that the party would work for the success of the DPA.

The team urged the DMK to strive for separate reservation for Muslims, a TMMK release said.

A delegation of the All-India Parayar Peravai, led by its president, M.M.C.Sekar, also met Mr.Karunanidhi and extended support to the DPA, a DMK release said.
