THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 2. Examinations for the Information Technology (IT) paper for Standard Nine in the State's schools will be conducted using a software `Softexam 1.0' prepared by the IT@School project. According to a press note issued here today, this is being done as a prelude to using the software for the SSLC examinations of March 2005, for which IT will be the 13th paper. Softex will offer a five-minute demonstration for the students before the commencement of the examination. The Windows-based software can be used for examinations in both English and Malayalam medium and the evaluation can be carried out using MS Office and Open Office packages. A Linux version of this CD, which can also be used in Kannada and Tamil medium schools, will be brought out shortly. Questions can be selected from among those stored in the software and the question paper prepared as per the differing abilities of the students. Since each student receives different questions, the chances of copying are eliminated. The grades of each student can be known immediately after the examination Care has been taken to keep the questions secret. Each invigilator in a school will be given a secret code. Only if this code is matched with that given to the school, can be examination be conducted, the press note said.
