THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 2. A city-based consultant with the World Bank has called for upgrading the Medical College as a deemed university under the relevant UGC Act to streamline the functioning of the premier teaching institution and improve the quality of patient care. In a memorandum submitted to the K. Mohandas, inquiry commission examining the complaints regarding the treatment provided to former Governor, Sikander Bakht, T.V. Sukumaran Nair makes out a case for developing the Medical College, which includes under its ambit the 765-bedded SAT Hospital, as a Medical Deemed Varsity under Section 3 of the UGC Act. According to the memorandum, the lack of professional management had resulted in the Medical College Hospital (MCH) and SAT Hospital becoming notorious for poor patient care, the latest instance of furore over medical services being centred on the care provided to the former Governor.
