PONDICHERRY, APRIL 3. A procession was taken out from near the uzhavar sandhai in the old bus terminal on Odiansalai to mark the completion of the 125th birth anniversary of The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram here. The Hindu Munnani leader, Ramagopalan, flagged off the procession. Among those who greeted the participants included the Pondicherry State Bharathiya Janata Party president, R. Kesavalu, the party legislator, A.M. Krishnamoorthy, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) coordinator, M. Veerabahu, and the Pondicherry State Hindu Munnani president, V. Selvam. The processionists were greeted at a point on Jawaharlal Nehru Street by the VHP International president, Ashok Singhal, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh national president, K.S. Suadarshan, the VHP International vice-president, S. Vedantham, Mr. Ramagopalan and the president of the People's Committee holding the celebration, R. Govindarajan. The participants sang bhajans and raised slogans.
Picketing attempt
Meanwhile, volunteers of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (Pondicherry unit), led by its president, Loku Ayyappan, were arrested at Pillaithottam, a few metres away from Nehru Street, when they attempted to stage picketing seeking a ban on the procession. Traffic was diverted.
