Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 3. The secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national committee and the party nominee for the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, today expressed concern at `deterioration of law and order' in Pondicherry. Addressing newsmen here, she said the murder of a youth inside a police station at Mudaliarapet on March 26 and killing of another in broad daylight the same day in the heart of the town revealed lack of protection to the people. Stating that it was the duty of the law-enforcing authority to ensure peace, Ms. Lalitha Kumaramangalam said she had brought to the notice of the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the prevailing situation in Pondicherry and sought additional forces. The BJP functionary said she had been getting threatening calls on her mobile phone. She would be forced to seek police protection. A separate manifesto (Vision Document 2004) for Pondicherry would be released in a week. She said the potential in the tourism, infrastructure, marine and industrial sectors had not been fully tapped. The BJP nominee disputed the criticism of the Pondicherry Congress Committee president, V. Narayanasamay, that she was an outsider and would not have interest in the welfare of people here. She said her father, the late Mohan Kumaramangalam, was elected from Pondicherry to Lok Sabha in 1971 and was the Minister for Industries and Steel in the Indira Gandhi cabinet. The Pondicherry State BJP president, R. Kesavalu, and the vice-president, M. Visweswaran, were present.
