Congress plans Priyanka's road shows in Vizag

VISAKHAPATNAM: The former Chief Minister and Congress candidate for Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha constituency, N. Janardhana Reddy, has invited Priyanka Vadra to hold road shows in the district.

"Though the programme is confirmed, the dates and venues of the road shows are yet to be finalised,'' the City Congress Committee president, Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao, told reporters on Saturday.

He said that the party would hold a public meeting either at Bullayya College or at Railway grounds in a few days. Mr. Reddy would address the meeting in support of party candidates for the three Assembly segments in the city -- Dronamraju Satyanarayana, S. Ranga Raju and Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy.

YSR's `yatra' schedule

Hyderabad: The following is the tour programme of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, former CLP leader: Launching of Jaitra Yatra from Chevella at 12 noon on April 5. It covers Manneguda, Vikarabad, Kodangal, Tandur, Zaheerabad and Narayankhed.

On the second day he covers Pitlam, Bitchkunda, Birpur, Kotgir, Rudraram, Varni, Bodhan, Yedulapalli, Rangal, Basar, Mudhole and Nirmal.

On April 7, Dr. Reddy will cover Balkonda, Armoor, Morthan, Kammarpalli, Metpalli, Korutla, Medipalli, Jagtial, Malliyal, Gangadhara, Karimnagar, Sultanabad and Peddapalli.

The next day, the Congress leader continues his yatra from Kamanpuram and covers Manthani, Muttaram, Tadicherla, Bhupalpalli, Regonda, Parkal, Kamareddipalli, Govindapuram, Mahandarupet, Sayampet, Tirumalagiri, Geesukonda, Peddapur, Akkampet, Chintapalli, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Station Ghanpur, Raghunathpalli and Jangaon.

PM calls up voter

NALGONDA: A phone call received on Friday was a pleasant surprise for Guduru Kondal Reddy, a cable operator of Narketpally in the district. The reason was that the caller was none other than the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee. He called up Kondal Reddy and greeted with a `namaskaar.' Mr. Vajpayee spoke to him for a few minutes and appealed to him to vote those who can save the country.

Mr. Reddy said that he was thrilled to it and made up his mind to vote the BJP-TDP combine in the coming elections.

Fake currency racket busted

GUNTUR: A fake currency note racket has been busted when the Gurzala police arrested three persons of the gang and recovered fake notes with a face value of Rs.1 lakh.

Three police constables on a tip-off have approached one of the gang members, Srinivas Reddy, in Jangamaheswarapuram and recovered fake notes in Rs.100 denomination. With his help, they raided the house of the main accused, Anwar Basha, in Vinukonda and seized a photo scanner, fake notes with an exchange value of Rs.65,000, half-printed notes, white paper bundles, a computer, cutting machine and other material. The gang had put in circulation fake notes with the help of one Nagi Reddy of Ummadivaram of Pullalacheruvu mandal, according to the police.

Two naxalites surrender

ADILABAD: Satpathy Tirupati alias Kiran, a commander of People's War Sirpur-Chennur dalam and a member of the action team, and A. Sammaiah, a member of Pratighatana group belonging to Bakkanna dalam, surrendered before the Warangal range DIG, T. Krishna Prasad, at the Bellampally police circle office on Saturday. The former, carrying a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs, surrendered with a rifle and 50 live rounds of ammunition.

He was involved in five murders, including that of Manepalli Mallesh, a surrendered extremist, in February this year. He had joined the People's War in December 2000. The two were produced at a press conference.

Eight of a nine-member gang of dacoits and pseudo naxalites were also produced at the press conference.

Landmines unearthed

VIZIANAGARAM: A special police party and CRPF jawans, combing the agency, chanced upon five landmines on Saturday planted beneath a kutcha road between Ramuluguda and Kidwai in the Neelakanthapuram police station limits of Kuruppam mandal.

The landmines, weighing 3 kg each, were defused by the bomb disposal squad, said the Superintendent of Police, Swati Lakra.

Combing operation in the agency was intensified further keeping in view electioneering by political parties, said the SP.

Six die in road mishaps

ELURU: Three quarry workers were killed and four others injured near Devarapalli in West Godavari district when the autorickshaw in which they were going to their work place at Gouripatnam hit a lorry.

According to the police, the dead were identified as A. Suryanchandra Rao (30), G. Suryachandram (29) and M. Rambabu (28). The injured persons were admitted to hospital in Rajahmundry.

Meanwhile, according to a report from Karimnagar, three persons were killed and four others injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided with an RTC bus near Balavanthapur village of Mallial mandal on Saturday.

The dead were identified as K. Jalender (24) and M. Sashikiran Reddy of Karimnagar and the autorickshaw driver, D. Mahender of Choppadandi.

Isolated rain forecast

HYDERABAD: There was isolated rain in Rayalaseema on Saturday while weather was mainly dry in Telangana and coastal Andhra.

Punganur and Badvel rained 3 c.m. and 2 c.m. respectively.

Day temperature changed little in the State. The highest for the day of 39 degees Celsius was recorded by Adilabad, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Nandigama, Nandyal and Nizamabad. Isolated rain is likely in the three regions of the State on Sunday, according to a forecast by the State Met office.

Pulse Polio camps at Tirumala

TIRUPATI: The TTD management is taking part in the nation-wide Pulse Polio programme by running camps on the Tirumala hills. The first round of the campaign's 10th phase will be held on April 4.

The TTD's Chief Medical Officer, P.N. Subbarayalu, has stated that camps will be held at the Aswini Hospital, GNC tollgate, RTC Complex, Central Reception Office, Kalyanakatta (tonsuring centre), pilgrims amenities complex, E-type quarters, Balaji Nagar, Ram Bagicha bus stand, Varahaswamy guest house, Medaramitta, Vasanta Mandapam, Vaikuntam queue complex (both I and II), Papavinasanam, etc. at Tirumala.

Official inspects KC Canal works

Cuddapah: The consultant of OECF, Japan, Kamiya, and engineers inspected the KC Canal modernisation works at the main canal and at Mundlapalle channel in Chennur mandal on Saturday.

The KC Canal Adinimmayapalle Distributary Committee Chairman, D. Chandramouleeswara Reddy, the Pathacuddapah sarpanch, T. Krishna Reddy, and the Palempalle sarpanch, Venkatasubbaiah, represented to Mr. Kamiya the need to include the Pathacuddapah tank in the modernisation package.

One held, arrack seized

Cuddapah: The Rayachoti Excise and Prohibition Circle Inspector, V.S. Das, said on Saturday that Malreddy alias Mallikarjun Reddy (28) of Thummalagondi village in Chittoor district was arrested on Saturday and sent to judicial remand after seizing 20 litres of illicitly distilled arrack.

Twenty earthen pots containing 30 litres of fermented jaggery wash each were destroyed near Bonumala village and a case was registered, he said. An enquiry was in progress to trace the owner of the contraband, Mr. Das stated.

DMHO appeal

Cuddapah: The District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) , T. Venugopal, said on Saturday that 3.17 lakh children under the age of five years would be administered oral polio vaccine through 2,980 immunisation centres in the district on Sunday.

He urged the members of voluntary organisations, teachers and health staff to ensure success of the programme.

Plea to TRS rebels

HYDERABAD: The CPI State Council Secretary, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, has appealed to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi rebel candidates who filed their nominations along with `B' forms, against CPI, CPI(M) and Congress candidates in some Assembly constituencies, to withdraw them. In a statement, he said if the TRS rebels continued in the fray, it would only help the Telugu Desam-BJP.

ACB raid on check post

ADILABAD: The Anti Corruption Bureau sleuths seized Rs. 15,710 in a four-hour pre-dawn surprise raid on the Bhoraj integrated check post about 7 km. from here. According to the Adilabad ACB, CI Kiran Kumar, the raid was carried out by four ACB Inspectors including himself.

Unauthorised cash amounting to Rs. 7,070 and Rs. 8,640 was seized from the Road Transport section and Commercial Taxes section respectively.

Collector's assurance

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, Sumita Dawra, has promised to take steps to provide compensation to farmers affected by the recent hailstorm in the district. She inspected the affected fields in Bejjanki and Koheda mandals on Saturday evening and consoled farmers who lost their crops.

She said she would submit a report to the State Government and the relief commissioner within two days.

Scholarship for NCC cadet

KARIMNAGAR: A cadet senior under-officer and B.Com final year student of SRR degree college, M. Sampath Kumar, of Karimnagar has won the Chief Minister's Rs. 1,200-scholarship 2003-04 for exhibiting rare talent in various NCC camps.

In a press note here today, the NCC company commander, Captain B. Madhusudhan Reddy said Sampath Kumar has also won the Captain Vijan Raghunandan memorial gold medal.
