BHUBANESWAR, APRIL 3. The Orissa Assembly Speaker, Sarat Kumar Kar, today quit the ruling Biju Janata Dal after being denied the party ticket for the Assembly polls from the Mahanga segment in Kendrapara district.

Mr. Kar, is likely to join the Congress with the hope of getting the party ticket, according to sources. In his resignation letter faxed to the Chief Minister and BJD president, Naveen Patnaik, from New Delhi, Mr. Kar said that he was shocked when his name did not appear in the BJD's list of candidates for the Assembly elections.
