`Foreign observers free to monitor polls in J&K'
By Our Staff Reporter
JAMMU,
APRIL 3.
The Election Commission said today that international observers were free to visit Jammu and Kashmir to monitor the Lok Sabha elections in the State as was done during the 2002 Assembly elections.
The Commission, which wound up its three-day visit to the State, met the representatives of political parties and heard their complaints relating to the alleged violation of the model code of conduct.
The Election Commissioners B.B. Tandon and N. Gopalaswami, who addressed a press conference here, expressed the hope that the Commission would repeat its performance in the last Assembly elections by holding "universally acknowledged free and fair elections in the State."
Asked whether international observers would be allowed to visit the State during the electoral process, Mr. Gopalaswami said international observers "can come after following the due norms which include taking permission from the Ministry of External Affairs. We would facilitate their visit."
