Leading artistes honoured

NEW DELHI APRIL 3. In recognition of their contribution to Indian music, the Union Government has honoured some of the country's leading artistes -- Sharan Rani, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Lata Mangeshkar, Balamurlikrishnan, Manna Dey and Pandit Jasraj -- with the title of National Artiste.

At a grand award ceremony held recently at Lalitha Kala Thoranam in Hyderabad, the awards were given away by the Chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice Jaya Chandra Reddy. All the artistes were awarded with a memento, a shawl and Rs. 1 lakh each for their outstanding achievements.

The first woman instrumentalist of India, 74-year-old Sharan Rani, besides being the first woman sarod player of the country, is also a pioneer and path-breaker who opened the door of instrumental music to women here. Apart from authoring a book on the origin antiquity and development of sarod, the Delhi-based Sharan Rani also has a collection of rare classical musical instruments.

Mayor, Dy. Mayor elections on April 12


NEW DELHI APRIL 3. Elections for the posts of the Mayor of Delhi and the Deputy Mayor have been scheduled for April 12. The last date for filing nomination papers is April 7.

The election of three members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi would also be held on April 12.

As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, the post of the Mayor of Delhi has been reserved this year for a Scheduled Caste candidate.

The one-year term of the outgoing Mayor, Ashok K. Jain, and the Deputy Mayor, Varyam Kaur, expired on March 31.

Bonsai exhibition today


NEW DELHI APRIL 3. The Indian Bonsai Association (IBA) will organise its 23rd Annual Bonsai Exhibition at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in the Capital on Sunday. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, will inaugurate one of Asia's prestigious exhibitions where over 200 bonsai plants will be displayed. The exhibition will remain open from 10-30 a.m. to 5-30 p.m.
