PONDICHERRY, APRIL 4. The New Justice Party (NJP), which is contesting the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat, has promised that it will strive to raise the strength of police and enforce the Goondas Act to put an end to occurrence of crimes. The NJP Pondicherry unit president, S. Ponnurangam, is contesting in the seat. The manifesto was released by the party Tamil Nadu unit general secretary, K.P. Pazhaniappan, at a meeting here today. It promised setting up of a separate development fund for the welfare of handloom weavers and release of the list of Most Backward Class. Steps would be taken to include in the MBC list Sengunthar, Velalargal and Kaikolars. Scheduled Tribes residing in Pondicherry would be extended one per cent quota though a Presidential approval. Other highlights of the manifesto are: steps to deepen the lakes and irrigation sources, procuring the due share of Cauvery water for Karaikal, comprehensive scheme for the development of fishermen, modernisation of textile mills, increasing MBBS seats in the JIPMER, special reservation for the students of Pondicherry in various courses in the Pondicherry University, opening of a State government medical college, setting up of industries for generating jobs, establishment of an electronic and technology park, setting up of a separate service commission, getting special economic zone and statehood for Pondicherry, providing free port facility and promotion of tourism activities.
