The State Government has announced that year-long celebrations will be organised for the singer. Saigal was born in Mastgad locality of Jammu in 1904 and his father, Amar Chand Saigal, was a Tahsildar at the court of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. Saigal was initiated to singing at an early age and has acted in 36 films, 29 in Hindi and seven in Bengali. He has sung in Persian, Pushto, Tamil and other languages. The Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir cultural academy, Ramesh Mehta, said the State had set up an All-India Centenary Celebration Committee to formulate programmes for the celebrations.
