BJP leadership meeting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM APRIL 4. The BJP will hold its leadership meeting at its headquarters on Monday. All the party office-bearers, including those of the feeder organisations and district presidents, will participate in the meeting, according to a statement issued by the BJP.

Keltron scheme

The flagship State public sector undertaking, Keltron, will provide Internet solutions to the Kerala Employability Enhancement Resources Scheme, offering web-based competency assessment and training in IT and IT- enabled sectors.

The package is being sponsored by the Centre for Continuing Education under the Department of Higher Education. A formal presentation of the schemes will be held at the Science and Technology museum here. The Higher Education Principal Secretary, K. Mohandas, the Keltron Managing Director, V. Ramkumar, and Kerala University Vice-Chancellor, B. Ekbal, will participate in the function.

Selected for award

The Malayalam novelist, C. Radhakrishnan, has been selected for the Lalithambika Antharjanam Literary Award for his lifetime contribution to Malayalam literature. The award carries a cash prize Rs. 30,001, a plaque and a citation. K. R. Meera has been selected for the promising young woman writer for her short-story compilation, `Orumayude Njarambu'. The award carries a cash price of Rs. 5001, a plaque and a citation, according to a statement of the Lalithambika Antharjanam Memorial Trust.

Tourism website

The official website of Kerala Tourism has secured a higher position than other tourism websites of South Asia in the web traffic analysis conducted by alexa.com, one of the authentic and popular website-ranking mechanisms. According to a release, the position of the website, www.keralatourism.org, is much above that of the websites of Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Dubai.

Elected ISA president

KOCHI APRIL 4. The former High Court judge, K. Sukumaran, has been elected president of the Delhi-based Indian Society of Authors (ISA). Mr. Sukumaran is at present a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court. The Hindi author, Shreyas Kumar, is the general secretary of ISA.

Elephant carcass found

PATHANAMTHITTA APRIL 4. The carcass of a wild elephant has been found in a putrefied condition at Ponnambalamedu in the Goodrickal range of the Ranni Forest Division.

A veterinary surgeon at Seethathode, D. Shinekumar, along with Forest officials, visited the spot today to conduct autopsy. Dr. Shinekumar said that the carcass must be five to six days' old.

2,45,000 children given polio vaccine

THRISSUR APRIL 4. Oral polio vaccine was administered to 2,45,000 children in the district today in the third phase of the Pulse Polio programme. According to the District Medical Officer, P.V. Mohanan, 2,058 booths were set up for the immunisation drive. The programme was inaugurated at the District Hospital this morning by the Collector, V. M. Gopala Menon. The additional health director, P.K. Sivaranam and the District RCH officer, Rajan Warrier, M.V. Raman, M.V. Rajagopalan and Davis were present on the occasion.

Vishu Thalappoli

KOZHIKODE APRIL 4. The Vishu Thalappoli Maholsavam, conducted once in three years, will be observed at the Thiruvani Bhagavathi Temple at Moonalingal here from April 5 to 15. The kodiyettam will be held on April 5 at 9.15 a.m. This will be followed by `Thiruvabharanam ezhunnallath', at 5 p.m.

Zamorin's birthday

It is going to be a quiet birthday for P.K.S.Raja, Zamorin of Calicut, as he turns 91 tomorrow. The birthday entourage of the Zamorin, whose forefathers were mighty rulers of this part of Malabar, include a visit to the Tali Mahadeva Temple with his family in the morning. The inhabitants of various orphanages here will be provided lunch on behalf of the Zamorin tomorrow.

Seminar

PATHANAMTHITTA APRIL 4. The Department of Indian System of Medicines (ISM) in the district will organise a one-day seminar on communicable diseases, Vision-2004, here on April 7. In a statement issued here today, the District Medical Officer (Ayurveda), P.V.Mukundan, said that the seminar was aimed at spreading public awareness on the preventive and curative aspects of various communicable diseases.
