TIRUCHI, APRIL 4. Polio drops were administered to 2.66 lakh children in Tiruchi district today under the third phase of intensified pulse polio immunisation programme. In all, 1,470 booths including 1,219 in rural areas, 217 in the corporation limits, nine in Thuriayur municipality and 24 in Manapparai municipality were operated. The District Revenue Officer, V. Srinivasan, inaugurated the programme at the Mathavaperumalkovil Health Sub-Centre in Mannachanallur panchayat union while the Corporation Commissioner, Anand Patil, inaugurated the programme at the Beema Nagar Maternity Hospital. According to a press release received from the district administration here today, children born after February 22 this year were enumerated and immunised, with the help of Rotary Clubs. Arrangements were made to immunise children in bus stands and at temples also. The district administration coordinated with the railway authorities to administer drops to children travelling in trains plying towards Karur, Ariyalur and Thanjavur. The Principal of St. Joseph's College, A.G. Leonard, inaugurated the programme at the Tiruchi Railway Junction, in the presence of the Divisional Railway Manager, N.S. Kasturi Rangan and the Additional Divisional Railway Manager, L. Narasim Prasad.
Karur
The Collector, P. Annamalai, inaugurated the programme at the government hospital in Karur. One lakh children were immunised in 766 centres. A door-to-door verification would be conducted for the next two days. The Joint Director of Health, Mustafa Meeran, said 3,000 volunteers were drafted for administering the drops. Self-help group (SHG) members were also involved in the programme.
Pudukottai
In Pudukottai district, about 1.70 lakh children were covered. The Collector, Hiteshkumar Makwana, inaugurated the programme at the community centre at Arasampatti near Thirumayam. As many as 1,272 immunisation centres were set up, and 3,000 staff members were deployed. Five centres were set up at Narthamalai, where the annual car festival of the local temple was under progress.
Perambalur
Over 1.41 lakh children in Perambalur district were administered the vaccine. Special arrangements were made to administer the drops to children at the weekly shandies, and at the Sri Dhandayuthapani Temple in Chettikulam, near here. Inaugurating the programme at the TELC Middle School in the town, the Collector, S. Natarajan, said 4,000 volunteers administered the drops. The Joint Director of Health, L.K. Pitchai, was present.
