Seer to protest temple ritual

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 4. To prevent the revival of the `Thookkam' ritual in Kerala, noted spiritual seer Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha along with his followers will lie in front of the scaffold at the Elavoor Putthankavu Devi Temple (EPDT) in Kerala on April 23. This step is being taken following the EPDT Committee's decision to re-start the Thookkam ritual that involves piercing two metal hooks on the back of a "hired religious professional and lifting him in a 32-feet high scaffold".

Done to propitiate the deity, the Thookkam ritual was stopped in 1987 by Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha.
