Himachal Pradesh
By Our Staff Correspondent
"The winning prospects of Mr. Kashyap are quite high in this otherwise Congress citadel", said Rajiv Bindal, a party spokesman. The Congress candidate, Dhani Ram Shandil, who also belongs to this district, was supported by the BJP in the last elections. Col. Shandil, at that time, had fought the elections on a Himachal Vikas Congress party ticket.
Meanwhile, the BJP State president, Suresh Bhardwaj, inaugurated the election office for the Shimla seat today. Former BJP Minister and in charge of the constituency, Narendra Bragta, and Mr. Kashyap were also present on the occasion.
While talking to the reporters, Mr. Bhardwaj elaborated on the major issues to be highlighted. These would include the Prime Ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the developmental works undertaken by the NDA government and by the earlier Dhumal government in the state, he said. He added that with the factionalism in the Congress, which has percolated down to the grassroot level as evident from the Chief Minister's statements, the BJP would win all the four seats.
The BJP president claimed that although the party had lost the Vidhan Sabha elections in the state last year, the vote percentage of the candidates had increased. He said the incumbency factor against the Congress and the vindictive attitude of the Chief Minister would also help the BJP in the forthcoming elections.
