COIMBATORE, APRIL 4. The Coimbatore Corporation has called upon the public to watch out for substances in bottled beverages that could be hazardous fungal growth. A press release from the Corporation Commissioner said today that surprise checks earlier by the Food Inspectors of the civic body had found such substances in bottled soft drinks of a multinational company. Laboratory tests had found "fungal growth formation" in the beverage and legal action was being initiated against the firm. The release said such instances would attract a punishment of six years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000, under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act. It said that if people found such a formation in soft drinks, including those with fruits as base, they should immediately inform the City Health Department in the Corporation on ph: 2395156.
