Army jawans held for hitting policeman

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 4. A Delhi police constable was allegedly beaten up by some Army personnel when he tried to stop them from making passes at women in Lodhi Gardens on Saturday. The New Delhi police have arrested three persons in this connection.

According to the police, Constable Satender of Tughlak Road police station was patrolling in Lodhi Gardens around 2-15 p.m. when he noticed four persons making obscene gestures and passing objectionable remarks at some women. Satender went up to them and warned them against such behaviour. However, they told him that they were Army personnel and did not care if he took them to the police station.

Even as Satender tried to argue with them, two of them grabbed him from behind and the other two began hitting him. Finding himself outnumbered, Satender managed to flash message on the wireless. Immediately, the local police team and the Police Control Room van reached the spot. Other people in the garden had also collected by then on hearing the commotion. Together, they managed to catch three of them, while the fourth person reportedly managed to escape. Those arrested have been identified as Naik Madan Singh, Hawaldar Mohan Lal Sharma and Constable Arvind Tirkey.

Satender was taken to Lohia Hospital. He had to be administered two stitches on the head. There were other injuries on his body too. A medical examination of the accused revealed they were drunk. The Army personnel, posted at Army headquarters in New Delhi, were also apparently out without proper permission.

The Tughlak Road police have booked the three accused for assaulting a public servant and trying to prevent him from discharging his duty. The Army officials have been informed of the arrests.
