Agony for users

Sir, — I am residing in Bharathi Nagar, Old Perungalathur, an area in and around the Mudichur Road. The road from Tambaram to Bharathi Nagar is in a poor state.

There is no train facility to reach our area. So, the condition of the road is important.

Vehicle users find it miserable to negotiate this road.

S. Padmavathi,

Old Perungalathur

Road in tatters

Sir, — The Cathedral Garden Road has been dug up repeatedly for the past two years by different government departments and private agencies (Telephones, Metrowater, Reliance etc.). The road is a nightmare for vehicle users. Not a day passes without an accident in this area. The road is uneven, full of potholes. Recently Metrowater has dug a huge pit. Similar work at the same site was done a few months ago.

Appeal to Metrowater

Sir, — Metrowater supplies on payment a lorry load of 9,000 litres of water. As the capacity of sumps in individual houses, is in 2,000-3,000 litres range Metrowater authorities are requested to supply 3,000 litres, by providing a meter in the lorry.

The private tankers charge exorbitantly for 4,000 litres as such lorries have three 4,000-litre compartments.

Hoping against hope

Sir, — This refers to the report in The Hindu of March 26 regarding `second Chennai project of Metrowater' nearing completion. Although this report arouses much hope it is tempered by the agony the occupants of 88 flats in our complex had gone through in the recent past. The joy of getting water connection four years ago was short-lived with water being supplied for a total period of 200 days and that too not regularly. Now for the past 300 days there has been no supply though we are paying the CMWSSB water charges of Rs. 50 per month per flat.

Wake up CMWSSB

Sir, — Among the "arrears slips" issued by the CMWSSB recently, on non-payment of property tax, was one in the name of my father who died several years ago. In 1993 his property was developed as an apartment complex and the owners of the flats all get demand notices, the project having been duly approved by and notified to appropriate authorities.

This being the case, the fact that the CMWSSB still issues "arrears slips" in the name of persons dead and gone, shows its slackness in updating its records.

A grave threat

Sir, — The stretch of Kamarajar Salai before the Santhome Water Storage Reservoir (with the median) is narrow. The movement of water lorries on this stretch from the police quarters to Ayyappa temple, of late, is proving to be a grave threat to the public. There is heavy slush on the road in mornings and high level of pollution in the evenings caused by water tankers. Instances of two-wheelers skidding are quite common.

If the Water Board closes the front "in and out" gates on this main road and opens up gates at the rear end (near the beach side end of MRC Nagar main road) in the interest of all, especially school-children, it will solve many problems.

Rail service

Sir, — Three years ago there was direct train service from Avadi to Tambaram. The service was suspended because of gauge conversion. With the conversion over between Beach and Egmore and BG service being operated between Beach and Tambaram why cannot the service between Avadi and Tambaram be resumed?

Return ticket fare

Sir, — The suburban rail commuters are now paying two full ticket fare, for a return journey between two suburban stations. As a concession to such commuters, the Southern Railway may consider charging 1-1/2 fare for return journey. This concession, if extended, may also find more takers for rail service, from commuters who may otherwise prefer bus journey due to lesser fare.

Extend bus service

Sir, — Buses on route No. 25 G are now plying between Anna Square and Poonamallee. I would like to request the MTC to extend some of the services to Kundrathur for the convenience of the passengers who are boarding at Vivekananda House, Royapettah etc. to have a direct service to Kundrathur without having to get down at Porur and take another bus.

Diversion will help

Sir, — The bus route No. 23 M — from Thiruvanmiyur to CMBT is via Lattice Bridge Road. There are already a number of buses plying through this road. If the above service is diverted through the Canal Bank road, it will benefit those who want to go to the railway stations situated at Thiruvanmiyur, Indira Nagar and Gandhinagar. In addition it will also serve students and public like as WPT, CPT, and VHS are on the way.

Dog menace

Sir, — The stray dog menace at Nanganallur is worsening. The fact that there is shortage in stock of drugs used to treat dog-bite patients at the Chromepet Government Hospital as reported in The Hindu, further emphasises the need for elimination of stray dogs at Nanganallur.

Elusive ID card

Sir, — I had submitted my voter ID card for the correction of a mistake in name as far back as April 25, 1999 and obtained an acknowledgement. But thus far the fate of my card is not known. I tried for a fresh card during videographing once but my request was turned down.

Inexplicable wait

Sir, — We have applied for PAN card through IT PAN service centre, UTI, Anna Nagar branch in August last. Our applications along with supporting documents and particulars of PAN number allotted by Delhi office of the Income Tax Department were duly received by IT PAN service centre (UTI), Anna Nagar on August 2, 2003. Till now we have not received PAN card.
