This Day That Age
The Congress Parliamentary Board, which met in New Delhi on April 5, reviewed the situation arising out of the election of Mr. K. Kamaraj Nadar as the Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in Madras. Mr. Balwantrai Mehta, General Secretary, explained to pressmen that the Board would adhere to its policy that the Leader of the Legislature Party in a State should not also occupy the position of the President of a Pradesh Congress Committee. Mr. Mehta said that the choice in this case had been left to Mr. Kamaraj Nadar himself. Members of the Board noted that an overwhelming majority of the Members of the Congress Legislature Party had supported Mr. Kamaraj Nadar's leadership and that of those who cast their votes for his rival, less than half belonged to the Legislature Assembly while the others were members of the Legislative Council and nominated members. Mr. Mehta mentioned that Mr. Kamaraj Nadar indicated to the Board his disinclination to shoulder the responsibility of office and his preference to lead the Congress organisation. The Board urged Mr. Kamaraj Nadar to consider the situation carefully and communicate his decision to the Board. Any decision which Mr. Kamaraj Nadar may reach, would be acceptable to the Board, he added.
