LONDON, APRIL 5. David Beckham, a role model for millions of football fans around the world, was today struggling to protect his image as a devoted family man after a British tabloid went to town claiming that he had a "secret affair'' with his personal secretary. The "affair'', according to the News of the World, was brewing last year when Beckham moved to Spain to join the Real Madrid football club while his wife Victoria, wrestling with a sagging pop career, stayed back in Britain with their two children. Describing it as the "story you thought you'd never read,'' the newspaper claimed in a front-page "world exclusive'' that Beckham was said to be lonely when he got a little too close to Rebecca Loos, 26, an employee of his PR management firm at the time. The "affair'', it said, started with a convivial meeting in a Madrid nightclub last September. Photographs of that rendezvous had then sparked speculation that Beckham was up to something that could wreck his marriage. Ms. Loos' brother, John, was quoted as saying that she had "confirmed'' that she had an affair with the world's most famous footballer. "Rebecca rang home early this morning and woke me up to warn me that journalists might come knocking at my door...,'' he told journalists. But publicly Ms. Loos has refused to comment. In a statement, Beckham dismissed the report as "ludicrous'' and insisted that he was "happily married." He said: "During the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life... The simple truth is that I am very happily married, have a wonderful wife and two very special kids.'' Unlike other footballers, Beckham's private life has been non-controversial.
